Editor's Gerkin Windows ReviewGerkin makes a good vinyl window and gets very solid marks on their patio doors as well. They are known for their commercial grade aluminum windows, as well as their residential vinyl windows. They make an excellent slider that achieves very impressive air infiltration numbers. They are definitely a regional company (based out of Nebraska) and it's not clear exactly how wide a net they cast in terms of their dealer/representative system. Certainly worth a look if you are in Kansas or Nebraska or one of the surrounding states if you are in the market for a solid mid range vinyl and/or aluminum window manufacturer. Comfort Series from GerkinI am considering the Comfort Series from Gerkin, which I have seen. The window had nice features, is a good looking window and is very competitively priced. So my question is, are they good windows and why isn't there more info about them on the web? I also looked at Reliabilt at HD, but didn't think it was in the same league. [Contractor Response]Gerkin windows are decent, although I only know their Rhino series and vinyl casements. They don't offer much in terms of color frame options and the lead time is longer than other companies I deal with. I like their casements and feel like they are priced very competitively, while the double hungs are a bit expensive compared to others. Besides these two little issues, I'd recommend them
[2nd Contractor Response]The Gerkin 4800 series seems pretty solid - .05 AI is an impressive number. It uses a welded sloped sill and has an aluminum reinforcement which I like. I thought the U-factor number was just OK, a .29 I want to say, perhaps an upgrade to the glass package would be worth it to lower that down to .25.
Gerkin vs OknaI have about 10 windows that need to be replaced, along with a patio door. I am looking at Okna, which seems to get good remarks as well as Gerkin which seems to be a smaller operation.
[Contractor Response]The 800 series from Okna line is an excellent window and beautiful to boot. They have a sliding door that is also excellent - full weld frame and a .06 air infiltration. The Gerkin 8800 series slider has a .05 AI, which is crazy low. The Okna is a better window, especially the 800, but the Gerkin is a good choice also.
[2nd Contractor Response]The Gerkin AI number of .05 is only in the single hung, not the double hung, but it's still an impressive number. I agree that the Okna is a better choice, but it certainly depends on the price they quote you. Get quotes on both and then compare them. Either choice should be good, assuming a solid install.
